The Upanishads are commonly referred to as Vedānta. Vedanta has been interpreted as the "last chapters, parts of the Veda" and alternatively as "object, the highest purpose of the Veda".The concepts of Brahman (ultimate reality) and Ātman (soul, self) are central ideas in all of the Upanishads, and "know that you are the Ātman" is their thematic focus.Along with the Bhagavad Gita and the Brahmasutra, the mukhya Upanishads (known collectively as the Prasthanatrayi) provide a foundation for the several later schools of Vedanta, among them, two influential monistic schools of Hinduism.

About Vedasa:

The Vedas are a large body of religious texts originating in ancient India. Composed in Vedic Sanskrit, the texts constitute the oldest layer of Sanskrit literature and the oldest scriptures of Hinduism.Hindus consider the Vedas to be apauruṣeya, which means "not of a man, superhuman" and "impersonal, authorless".

Vedas are also called śruti ("what is heard") literature, distinguishing them from other religious texts, which are called smṛti ("what is remembered"). The Veda, for orthodox Indian theologians, are considered revelations seen by ancient sages after intense meditation, and texts that have been more carefully preserved since ancient times. In the Hindu Epic the Mahabharata, the creation of Vedas is credited to Brahma. The Vedic hymns themselves assert that they were skillfully created by Rishis (sages), after inspired creativity, just as a carpenter builds a chariot.

The Upanishads are records of the deepest spiritual experiences of the ancient Indian Rishis of that age. It is here that one gets a glimpse of the workings of the minds of the great seers and thinkers of ancient India. It is from here that the entire systems of Indian philosophy and religion and spirituality have drawn their inspiration and the energy for their growth and enrichment. The Upanishads represent the true Indian spirit in not only religion, philosophy and spirituality but they are also the fountain-head of all Indian art, poetry and literature.

There are several commentaries, both ancient and modern, by Indians and scholars from the West. Among them the writings of Sri Aurobindo on the Upanishads occupy a special place as they are based directly on intuitive and spiritual experiences, and are yet presented in a manner suitable to the modern rational mind.

We present here the major Upanishads in the light of Sri Aurobindo, which may be useful for the spiritual seeker, the scholar of religion and philosophy, and the student interested in India’s spiritual tradition, her ancient and rich culture. It will be of special benefit to the youth who want to imbibe the values contained in the Upanishads and to build a new India in the future.
