Curro Castle Bryanston is an independent nursery school in Bryanston, Johannesburg, that provides quality early childhood development for children from 3 months to Grade R As a Curro Castle, we aim to provide affordable school fees and small class sizes that engage each child in our internally developed play-based curriculum based on the internationally successful Curiosity Approach.
What do we offer?
At Curro Castle Bryanston, we provide a safe, nurturing environment where children are cared for and engaged in play-based developmental activities. Through affordable school fees, our classrooms are designed to encourage educational curiosity, while our playgrounds are equipped with play structures that inspire physical development through movement and play. Our small class sizes are divided by age group, which allows our teachers to spend quality time with each child.
We specialise in caring for babies
Our classes are separated based on age, and our uniquely equipped baby hub accommodates babies from 3 months to 24 months. With dedicated teachers, teacher’s assistants, and an on-site kitchen, the babies in our care are loved and nurtured in a home away from home.
We focus on early childhood development through loose-parts play
As a Curro Castle, we know that the development of curiosity and imagination in preschool is vitally important to the development of problem-solving skills and critical thinking later on. Therefore, we encourage playing with loose-parts and multi-purpose playthings, rather than single-purpose toys that don’t involve much imagination. Through loose-parts play, children use their natural curiosity to explore previously undiscovered fascinations such as stacking, rolling, sliding, fitting, colours and more.

What is the Curiosity Approach?
The Curiosity Approach emphasises the importance of uninterrupted play as a method of learning, by letting a child’s natural curiosity and interests guide the learning experience. This involves a re-conceptualised indoor and outdoor environment, loose-parts play areas, a sensory playground and real-life objects to explore rather than unimaginative, single-purpose toys.
How does the Curiosity Approach work in practice?
Removing most tables and chairs from our nursery school classrooms creates space for themed pockets of learning and furniture made from natural materials. When entering the classroom, children are drawn to various play stations designed by teachers to arouse their curiosity. Children in our small class sizes will be allowed to explore as they wish, with teachers guiding them to ensure that they still gain exposure to a multitude of skills and learning facets.

We accommodate Grade R learners
Grade R is the bridge from the tangible world to the world of symbols and numbers in Grade 1. Therefore, we focus on an integrated play-based programme that aims to develop the children’s phonological, literacy, mathematical, and creative problem-solving skills in a fun way that will ensure they are well prepared for primary school. Learners are also introduced to specialised offerings such as Robotics through Duplo Lego, which boosts their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
As we are part of the Curro group, our Grade R learners enjoy preference when applying to any school in the Curro group, particularly nearby Curro Rivonia.

Curro Castle Bryanston activities
As a Curro Castle, we believe that participation in extramural activities plays an important role in early childhood development. Our daily programme is packed with a variety of physical and cognitive activities where children play while they learn, which are included in our affordable school fees. Extramural activities are offered as additional opportunities to strengthen focused areas or hone certain skills. Our extramural activities are offered by external tutors or coaches at an additional cost and take place on the school’s premises.

Boarding schools
At Curro, several of our schools across the country provide school accommodation at their boarding schools. With on-site boarding staff, laundry and housekeeping facilities, comfortable study areas, Wi-Fi, three healthy meals per day, modern rooms and lounges, and small room numbers, our boarders get a strong sense of home away from home.
How big are the rooms?
Our spacious school accommodation generally houses two to four boarders per room, depending on the boarding school campus. Some schools even have modular flats with en-suite bathrooms rather than a traditional hallway layout, while others may have bathrooms per a certain number of rooms.

How do leave arrangements and visits work?
Our affordable boarding schools are generally closed for one weekend a month and during the school holidays. This may vary depending on the school itself. Some campuses provide fun activities for boarders staying in over the weekends, while others encourage parents to visit whenever they can.
How does supervision work?
At Curro, our affordable boarding schools are supervised and run by a team of live-in boarding staff, which often includes teachers at the school. The number of boarding staff depends on the number of boarders accommodated. When teachers live on-site, they often help with homework or study sessions.
